What is the difference between Salah al Isthikharah & Salah al Hajah ?

AL KITHAB ENGLISH DOUBT CLEARING SESSION No : 1
26.02.2017

QUERY : What is the difference between Salah al Isthikharah & Salah al Hajah ? Is there any proof from Quran and Sunnah for these prayers? Explain.

ANSWER IN BRIEF :

Holy Quran commands us to seek Allah's help through patience and Salah through Verse No 45 of Surah al Baqarah. This command is general and we may ask for Allah's help through  patience and prayers for any of our permitted/halaal needs.

In respect of Salah al Isthikharah (Salah seeking goodness in some particular affair/job/thing), there is Sahihu /authentic Hadith as proof and there is a specially prescribed post-Salah
supplication/duaa for this purpose.

REGARDING Salah al haajath( Salah to fullfil one particular permitted need) there is no authentic hadith. The Hadith is weak /da'eef as commented by Imam Thirmudhi himself who reported the Hadith( as one of the reporter of the chain is weak). But it should be noted that, though the Hadith is weak/da'eef, it is not moudoo'a/fabricated.Also we may bear in mind that seeking Allah's help in all our needs through patience and Salah, is a command to us in Holy Quran , and hence the principle of Salah al hajath is in consonance with the teaching of Holy Quran.

ANSWER IN DETAIL:

A.

Seeking Allah's help

Please see VERSE 45 of Surah Al Baqarah:

  سورة البقرة

وَاسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى الْخَاشِعِينَ
'' And seek help in patience and As-Salat (the prayer) and truly, it is extremely heavy and hard except for 'khaashi-een' ( those who fear Allah)

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:
Nabi swallallaahu a'lyhi wa sallam used to teach us the way of doing Isthikhara (Isthikhara means to ask Allah to guide one to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Suras of the Qur'an. He said, "If anyone of you thinks of doing any thing/matter/job he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer):

'Allahumma innee astakheeruka bi'ilmika, Wa asthaqdiruka bi-qudrathika, Wa as'aluka min fadlika Al-`azeem Fa-innaka thaqdiru Wa laa aqdiru, Wa ta'lamu Wa laa a'lamu, Wa anta 'allamu l-ghuyoob. Allahumma, in kuntha tha'lamu anna hadha-a'l amra Khairun lee fee deenee wa ma'a'ashee wa'aqibathi `Amree (or 'aajili `Amree wa'ajilihi) Faqdirhu wa yas-sirhu lee thumma barik lee Feehi, Wa in kuntha tha'lamu anna hadha-a'l amra  shar-run lee fee deenee wa m'aa'ashee wa 'aaqibathi `Amree(or fee'ajili `Amri wa ajilihi) Faswrifhu annee waswrifnee anhu. Waqdir liy-al-khaira haithu kana Thumma ardinee bihi.'

(O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, And Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the Unseen(Guyoob). O Allah! If You know that this thing/matter/job is good for my Religion/Deen and my subsistence and in my Hereafter(or said: If it is better for my present and later needs), then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, And then bless me in it, and if You know that this thing/matter/job is harmful to me in my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter--(or said: If it is worse for my present and later needs)--Then keep it away from me and keep me be away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, And make me satisfied with it). The Prophet swallallaahu a'lyhi wa sallam added that then the person should  mention his need.

From the explanation of this Hadith , as given in Fath'hul Bari by Imam Ibnu Hajar Al Asqalani :
.......................
Ibnu Abee Jamra says : The words in the Hadith
"If anyone of you thinks of doing any thing/matter/job''; are general. But it is special and not for all affairs, because in the ' compulsory deeds'  there is no scope for 'isthikaara' , i.e, we are not allowed to seek whether we would do such a deed or not and we are bound to do all compulsory deeds without ' isthikhara'.Also we have no choice to consult ( isthikharah) whether we should abandon or keep away from a forbidden/ haraam deed, as we are bound to avoid it without isthikhaarah. But if two options are there to select from 'naflu/sunnah items' or  and we have chance to select either one at a time, then we may do isthikhaarah. In the case of permitted/halaal/mubah items also there is room for seeking which one is better(isthikhaara).

Abdullah bin Abi Awfa narrated that :

Allah's Messenger swallallahu a'lyhi wa sallam said: "Whoever has a need from Allah, or from one of the sons of Adam, then let him perform Wudu', performing it well, then pray two Rak`ah, then praise Allah and say Salath upon the Prophet swallallahu a'lyhi wa sallam . Then let him say:

'None has the right to be worshiped but Allah. Al-Halim (the Forbearing) Al-Karim (the Generous). Glorious is Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I ask You for that which warrants Your mercy, and that which will determine Your forgiveness, and the fruits of every righteous deed, and safety from every sin; do not leave a sin for me without forgiving it, nor a worry without relieving it. Or a need that pleases you without granting it. O Most-Merciful of those who have mercy.'

After reporting this Hadith Imam Thirmudhi commented :This Hadith is 'Gareeb' , and there is  remarks about its chain,as there is Fa'aiu bnu Abdi Rahman who is a 'weak reporter.
